. tonight one of the u.s. navy's deployed special forces commanders is dead. he was in afghanistan and military investigators are working on the belief that he took his own life. here's our pentagon correspondent barbara starr with what few details we have so far. >> reporter: very sad news this holiday weekend for u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. the navy is investigating the death in afghanistan of one of its most senior deployed s.e.a.l. officers as an apparent suicide. a u.s. military official tells cnn. navy commander joe w. price, 42 years old, died december 22nd, while serving as the commanding officer of s.e.a.l. team 4. a group of more than two dozen commandos conducting combat operations in the southern command of the country. that u.s. military official who's directly familiar with the event said the family has been notified of the death, and has been notified and is being investigated as an apparent suicide. there is no indication at this time that commander price was involved in any military related investigations or any controversies the officials said. all indications are, when

with some sad news today. a u.s. navy seal killed during the daring rescue of an american held captive in the heart of afghanistan. good morning i'm jon scott. jenna: i'm jenna lee. when we talk about the american captive, we have a picture of the doctor whose live was saved. he is dylan joseph, a native colorado. he was in afghanistan for humanitarian work when i was kidnapped by the taliban in a province east of kabul. national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at pentagon with more. jen, do we have any details on the american who gave his life to save this doctor? >> reporter: they're waiting to contact the family so the military does not release the identity of the seal killed in that rescue attempt. we know he was a member of "seal team 6". not necessarily a member of the same group that carried out the usama bin laden raid. there are about 200 members of "seal team 6". this man, as you said, gave his life for his fellow american. here is a statement that was read by the spokesman for isaf today. >> it has been decided to start the operations since the assessment the

reports say i ran's navy will hold the thrill from 6 days. they will deploy ships and submarines and also test fire missiles. ainsley? >> brace yourselves. a hpotential strike by union workers might stark another recession. diane macedo has the story for us. >> business groups and state officials are calling on president obama to use emergency powers to avoid a coast wide shut down warning that could cost billions of dollars. weeks after a western complex rauz crippled by a strike. that strike is estimated to have cost the u.s. 1 billion a day. this new phonings strike could effect more than 14,000 workers. together they handle 97 percent and could show supply chain across the entire country. the big issue is the labor dispute between the association which represent staff workers and maritime alliance. the talks between the two broke down december 18th and the union could strike if they can't reach an agreement before the latest contracts expire on december 29th. both sides get to agree on wages the sticking point is container royalties payments to union workers based on cargo rates. they
